Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Here at Eco Retreats we pride ourself on our environmental awareness, after all we source the waters for our tipis from from a picturesque fresh water spring and fit our tipis with “ozans” for extra insulation but what can you do to be more environmentally proactive? join us as we show you to top 5 ways to save the environment and reduce your carbon footprint from the safety of your own home.

1. Switch It Off!

Well, this first tip is rather basic but unfortunately still needs to be said, we now live in an age where our use of technological devices is rapidly excelling and with that our amount of plug usage is still rising, for some the use of excess electricity is a necessary evil but the amount of electricity we use could easily be reduced with one simple tip: if you’re not using it plug it out! even when devices are on standby they are perilously guzzling away at energy which will not only affect the environment  and your carbon footprint but also it will soon add up to a big dent in your wallet too, a television on standby still consumes up to 30% of the energy it would if it was on so imagine how much energy is eaten away at if you constantly leave your telly on standby!

2. Get Insulated!

If I was to tell you up to 60% of the money you spent on your heating was being wasted would you be happy? well if your house isn’t insulated it could well be! Solid wall insulation could save you up to £475 a year (which would cover a nice Eco Retreats Holiday) but this could all be solved easily and cheaply British Gas offer free insulation to suitable homes and just think If every UK household suitable for Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI) installed it, a saving of 4 million tonnes of CO2 every year could be made – a decrease in 560kg of CO2 per household ,drastically cutting our carbon footprint.

3. Eat Locally to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

It’s estimated that 13% of greenhouse gas emission are cause by the transport and production of food so now might be the time to start some home growing, gardening has some added benefits too, a preliminary study found that people who garden could live up to 14 years longer! so a cleaner environment , a lower carbon footprint and an added 14 years life expectancy!

If gardening really isn’t your forte make sure to eat local and most importantly eat seasonal!

 4.Drive Fuel Efficiently

Driving is a modern day luxury  that many can’t live without and for people who are based rurally it is a daily necessity a few steps can be taken to make  driving more fuel efficient and in turn more environmentally friendly, firstly when you look into buying your car make sure to look for a car with a low estimated mile per gallon this can be checked here, then once you have your car your driving style too can help you lower your emissions, driving less aggressively and within the speed limits has been found to lower petrol usage by almost 33% and if you can insure your tires are correctly inflated you can add another 3% to that figure.

5. Holiday At Home

"Mae'r holl brofiad yn fwy na fedrwn ni gredu."

In 2013 air travel was the cause of 705 million tonnes of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere, while travelling to exotic destinations can be enticing a lot can be said to staying at home in the UK this summer has been forecasted as potentially being one of the best on record and your quick jaunt up the motorway could reduce your CO2 emissions by 2 tonnes!

So with that in mind why not consider a weekend in an environmentally efficient tipi or yurt in the secluded beauty that the  west of Wales has to offer?
